I think the most salient example of this is a non-profit we helped that didn’t know how best to serve their customers. We reached out to key users and asked them what was driving them to or away from the product.

In this case, our client’s users were struggling with double entry – after they added data to our client’s system, they had to add it elsewhere. As a result, we provided them with this and feedback on 5 other opportunities we discovered. In the end, we spend several months making it possible to put data into the system and to export it from the system easily and with built-in customization to ease the process. We also struck a balance between creating a complex featureset and giving users the option to just have us help them with the import. We believed that interacting directly with users as part of this process is the best way to find real solutions to the problem.
